MOSCOW, October 29 (RIA Novosti) - A military court in Moscow sentenced Monday a Russian major to seven years in prison for spying for Poland.
Investigators in the Federal Security Service (FSB) said Major Sergei Yurenya had been recruited by Polish security agencies in 2005-2006, and had subsequently provided them with intelligence on military units in the Moscow Military District, an area covering some 700,000 square kilometers (430,000 square miles) in central Russia.
Investigators also said Yurenya had also made attempts to infiltrate into the FSB, Russia's main domestic security body.
A military prosecutor, Ramil Shakurov, said on Monday that Yurenya "was arrested while performing a new Polish assignment to infiltrate into FSB ranks".
"I am satisfied with the court ruling, as Yurenya pleaded guilty on all charges," Ramil Shakurov said, adding that no major damage had been caused to the country's security.
Yurenya, who had also pleaded guilty of treason during the investigation, was stripped of his rank.
The criminal case against him was opened in March 2007 and passed on for court hearings in August.
