Russian, U.S. experts to play war games in Moscow

10:36 30/10/2007
MOSCOW, October 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russian and U.S. military experts begin on Tuesday a two-day command-and-post (CAP) exercise to practice joint peacekeeping operations, Russia's Ground Forces spokesman said.

The exercise, which comes as part of the 2006 Russian-U.S. military cooperation agreement, is supervised by Russia's Deputy Ground Forces Commander, Lt. Gen. Valery Yevnevich and U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff senior official, Rear Adm. John Bowling III.

"The CAP exercise will focus on setting up a joint coalition headquarters, its interaction with international and non-profit organizations, and practicing decision-making for peacekeeping operations," Col. Igor Konashenkov said.

He also said the military experts would practice the ability of their respective headquarters to operate effectively together during potential joint peacekeeping operations in "hot spots" around the world.

Meanwhile, the Russian Armed Forces are continuing large-scale military maneuvers in Russia's Far East.

On Tuesday, Ground Forces units were joined by Air Force and Navy units in a combined-forces anti-terrorism exercise, an Air Force spokesman said.

"According to the plan, frontline bombers, reconnaissance and ground support aircraft will assist Ground Forces and Navy units in eliminating illegal armed groups, their bases and arms depots," Sergei Roshcha said.
