The seagull, with a globe above its one visible wing and the inscriptions "APEC" and "Russia 2012" underneath, was designed by Yevgeny Pogrebnyak, a resident of the Primorye Region where the 21 Pacific Rim nations will gather for the summit.
"This work meets all the criteria: the emblem must be patriotic, highlight the subject of the 2012 APEC summit and include symbols from the Primorye Region and Vladivostok," said Anzhela Tukmakova of the selection commission.
She also said the seagull had been chosen from 1,500 other emblems put forward by some 400 local contestants since mid-October. The winner was awarded a prize of 65,000 rubles ($2,600).
The APEC summit is scheduled to be held on Russky Island in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok. Investment in construction and infrastructure projects for the summit is set to reach 147.5 billion rubles ($6 billion).
