KEMEROVO, January 18 (RIA Novosti) - Local authorities in west Siberia have decided to erect a monument to the humble potato, an advisor to the regional governor said on Friday.

The monument, to be put up in the Kemerovo Region's Mariinsk District, represents a one-meter (3.37 foot) granite potato plant fighting its way through cracked soil and will be erected as part of the UN-sponsored International Year of the Potato 2008.

"It is no coincidence that such a monument is to be erected in the Mariinsk region, as Mariinsk is home to the world record for a potato harvest," Natalya Dashkovskaya said.

Almost 70 years ago, in 1939, a local state-owned farm supposedly collected 121.7 tons of potatoes from one hectare.

The UN has declared 2008 the International Year of the Potato to introduce the plant as a major component in the battle to eradicate global hunger and poverty.

In terms of quantity, the potato is the world's fourth largest food crop, with about 300 million metric tons grown annually. 40% of the global potato harvest is in Russia, China and India.
