MOSCOW, February 8 (RIA Novosti) - The European Court of Human Rights ordered Russia to pay almost $3 million in compensation in human rights abuse lawsuits in 2007, a Russian representative at the court said on Friday.

Natalia Yabkina said the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg examined about 200 cases against Russia last year.

Yabkina said 24 Russian plaintiffs would receive a total of about 700,000 euros (over $1 million) in compensation for unwarranted and illegal detentions. Russia was also ordered to pay a total of 800,000 euros to 23 people who had complained about cruel and humiliating treatment at the hands of the Russian authorities.

Of the 200 cases, 116 complaints concerned delays in implementing court rulings. Around 800,000 euros (over $1 million) was ordered to be paid in compensation for this type of offence.

She said Russia traditionally lost suits regarding the restriction of freedoms, especially freedom of expression and assembly, in the Strasbourg court.
