Two Russians dead, one injured in avalanche in East Siberia

VLADIVOSTOK, March 25 (RIA Novosti) - An avalanche that hit a group of eight Russians, killed two and injured another in Yakutia, East Siberia, a regional emergency spokesperson said on Tuesday.

"We got a satellite call at 10:40 a.m. local time (01:40 GMT) that a group of eight tourists had been hit by an avalanche," Yekaterina Potvorova said, adding that a helicopter had been dispatched and the tourists should be delivered by evening.

When the avalanche hit three Russians were buried in the fall, the other group members managed to locate and dig them out, but two were already dead and the other sustained orthopedic injuries.

The group leader is among the dead.

The group of extreme tourists had planned to ski from Khandyga to Nizhnezhdanskoye between March 14 to April 17, when the tragedy happened.
