ST. PETERSBURG, April 7 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's consumer rights watchdog has fined the St. Petersburg aquapark where more than 200 people suffered chlorine poisoning in late March 37,000 rubles ($1,500), Rospotrebnadzor said on Monday.
A total of 229 people, including 189 children, sought medical treatment for chlorine poisoning after visiting the Waterville aquapark in late March. It is believed that the swimming pools at the aquapark had been over-chlorinated.
Health and safety checks subsequently revealed numerous violations regarding water quality and safety equipment standards at the facility. The aquapark's owners have promised to complete work to rectify all the violations by April 30.
The worst disaster to hit a Russian aquapark was in 2004, when the roof of the Transvaal aquapark in Moscow collapsed, killing 28 people and injuring over 100.
