MOSCOW, April 15 (RIA Novosti) - A police officer has been kidnapped in Gudermes, 36 km (22 miles) east of Chechnya's capital Grozny, in Russia's North Caucasus, a local police source said on Tuesday.

A witness reported on Monday that his brother, a local police officer, had been dragged into a car at gunpoint and driven off in an unknown direction at 5:00 p.m. Moscow time (1:00 p.m. GMT).

A search and investigation is underway.

Earlier on Monday, two armed men were killed, when they opened fire at a police outpost near the village of Komsomolskoye. A GP-25 grenade launcher, a Kalashnikov rifle and two Makarov pistols were recovered from their vehicle.

In a separate development, a shootout occurred in Gudermes Monday, when two rival columns of vehicles refused to give way to each other.

The shootout involved a security convoy of Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov and 15 or 20 security guards of Sulim Yamadayev, commander of the Vostok special battalion. No casualties were reported. The circumstances of the incident are being established.

Earlier still, two schoolchildren died after they threw a grenade launcher round into a fire which exploded. The incident took place on the outskirts of the Komsomolskoye village on Sunday.
