MOSCOW/NAZRAN, May 23 (RIA Novosti) - A group of unidentified assailants opened fire early Friday on a border guard garrison in downtown Nazran, in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, an Ingush law enforcement source reported.
"The attack [involving automatic weapons and grenade launchers] occurred at 3:00 a.m. Moscow time [23:00 GMT]. No casualties have been reported," the source said.
A spokesman for the regional Federal Security Service (FSB) directorate later confirmed the attack, saying there were no casualties among the garrison personnel.
An investigation is underway.
Sporadic terrorist attacks and militant clashes remain common in Russia's North Caucasus republics, although the active phase of the Kremlin campaign to fight militants and terrorists in Chechnya is officially over. Violence often spills over into neighboring republics, in particular Ingushetia and Daghestan.
