Moscow electric substation fire put out

Subscribe
MOSCOW, June 6 (RIA Novosti) - A fire at an electric substation in northwest Moscow has been extinguished, a Moscow electricity distributor said on Friday.

The fire started in the Strogino district earlier in the day and covered, according to previous reports, five square meters.

"A short circuit in the transformer resulted in [insulating] oil being set alight. The oil has now burned out, and the fire has been extinguished," said Alexander Shapochkin, a spokesman for the Moscow United Electricity Grid Company. "All the equipment, apart from the transformer, is operating properly at the substation."

No casualties have been reported, and there were no power cuts in the region.

A substation transformer failure in May 2005 resulted in power outages across Moscow and in forty-two surrounding municipalities, leaving more than 150 hospitals without electricity and causing major disruptions to commuter traffic. About 4 million residents of the Moscow region were affected by the power cuts.
