MOSCOW, June 9 (RIA Novosti) - G8 finance ministers will discuss possible funds to help poor countries overcome their food crisis, and to support emissions-free technology, when they meet in Japan on June 13-14, the Russian finance minister said on Monday.

Alexei Kudrin told the presidium of Russia's parliament that the meeting in Osaka will address "two initiatives to counter the sharply reduced access to food among poor countries."

The first will be to provide urgent support, and the second will be aimed at easing the crisis on the world food market.

The ministers will also discuss Japan's proposal to set up a clean technology fund. The aim of the fund would be to support the development of viable alternatives to fossil fuels. Discussions are likely to include the use of biofuels.

Kudrin said that in view of the negative impact of biofuels, the idea of developing them should be reconsidered.

Biofuels are widely condemned by environmentalists for causing deforestation and diverting farmland to fuel production, contributing to world food price growth.

The Russian minister also said that availability of healthcare technology and medicine will be on the agenda.

The 34th summit of the Group of Eight industrialized nations - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the U.K. and the U.S. - will be held on the Japanese island of Hokkaido on July 7-9.
