Russia condemns Iraq blast, calls for reconciliation

18:23 18/06/2008
MOSCOW, June 18 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Foreign Ministry totally condemned the terrorist attack on the Iraqi capital of Baghdad which left 63 dead and over 70 injured and called for national reconciliation in the country.

The blast shook a busy commercial street Tuesday evening in west Baghdad's Hurriya neighborhood mostly populated by Shiite Muslims. It is the deadliest attack in the Iraqi capital since March 6, when two bombs exploded in the predominantly Shiite district of Karradah, killing around 70 and injuring about 120 people.

"In Moscow we totally condemn this inhuman act, which killed completely innocent people," the ministry said in a statement, adding it was "an alarming reminder that the hard-line fight against terrorism must be accompanied by continuous progress in the political sphere with the aim of achieving genuine national reconciliation and accord."

The ministry expressed its condolences to the families and victims and solidarity with the Iraqi government in opposing any terrorist attacks.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
