Russian businessman fails to stop extradition from Switzerland

MOSCOW, June 25 (RIA Novosti) - The European Court of Human Rights has upheld Russia's extradition request for a Russian businessman accused of fraud, the Prosecutor General's Office said Wednesday.

Yury Privalov, former head of a subsidiary of Sovcomflot, Russia's largest shipping company, has been charged with defrauding the company out of more than $400 million. He was detained in Switzerland.

In 2006, the Prosecutor General's Office applied for his extradition, and last December Switzerland granted the request.

Privalov's lawyers appealed, and the extradition process was suspended. Now that the court has rejected the appeal, Privalov will be extradited to Russia.

If convicted, he faces a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
