KRASNOYARSK, June 30 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 108 people in the Krasnoyarsk Territory in East Siberia have been diagnosed with yersiniosis, a stomach infection, a spokeswoman for the local consumer rights watchdog said.

Yersiniosis is an infection contracted through eating undercooked meat, milk, water or vegetables contaminated by the bacteria. The disease, which usually occurs in young children, typically develops from four to seven days after exposure and may last up to three weeks.

"Of the 108 people, 96 children and one adult have been hospitalized," Natalya Krasnopeyeva said.

The first outbreak of yersiniosis occurred in the Solnechny summer camp on June 20, with a total of 72 children hospitalized as of Monday morning. In a separate development, a total of 21 children from the Shaktyor summer camp in the Krasnoyarsk Region were also diagnosed with yersiniosis.

Additional measures to prevent the disease have been introduced in all childcare facilities in the region. All dishes made of raw vegetables have been banned, as it is believed the outbreak was caused by salads made with raw cabbage.

On Sunday, 11 children aged 3-6 were hospitalized from a local kindergarten. Sporadic cases of the disease have been registered in another nursery and an orphanage.
