Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday he expects a new Russian anti-corruption law to be adopted by the end of this year.
MOSCOW, July 2 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday he expects a new Russian anti-corruption law to be adopted by the end of this year.

Kremlin administration chief, Sergei Naryshkin, who heads the anti-corruption council's board, presented on June 25 a draft national anti-corruption program. The new federal law is set to be drafted by October 1.

"I expect that we will enter the New Year with the new anti-corruption legislation in force," Medvedev told a council of legislators.

The president said developing a comprehensive system of administrative regulations in the country was a priority, but warned against excessive campaigning.

"We are capable of and like running various campaigns, but this campaigning could tear business apart, the government and the entire country," he said.

Medvedev urged "sensible, tough and consistent action" in the fight against corruption.

"I expect such action from legislators and law enforcement agencies," the president said.

Sergei Mironov, speaker of the upper house of parliament, pledged on behalf of all legislators to draft an entire package of anti-corruption laws by the start of 2009.

"We will carry out, within the deadline, the task set by the president - to see the New Year in with a whole package of anti-corruption laws both at the federal and regional levels," the senator said.

Medvedev, a former lawyer, has made the fight against corruption one of his main goals since taking office in early May.
