SOCHI, August 7 (RIA Novosti) - Two people were killed and four injured when an unidentified explosive device went off Thursday morning on a city beach in Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi, which will host the 2014 Winter Olympics, investigators said.

The device went off at 10.25 a.m. local time (6.25 a.m. GMT) on a beach crowded with tourists at the peak of the summer tourist season, killing a 31 year-old man and a 22 year-old woman.

"Four people received injuries of varying degrees and were rushed to hospital, no children were injured," said Vladimir Markin, spokesman for the Investigation Committee of the Russian Prosecutor General's Office.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has instructed his envoy to the southern federal district, Vladimir Ustinov, to assume personal control of the investigation. The beach has been cordoned off while investigators work to establish the cause of the blast.
