MAKHACHKALA, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - Two police officers died and another was seriously injured when a gunman opened fire on a checkpoint in the capital of Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan, a source in the interior ministry said.
"Around 10.00 p.m. Moscow time an unknown gunman opened fire with a Kalashnikov on a police patrol in the center of Makhachkala... two police officers died, a third is in hospital in a critical condition, the attacker was killed," the source said, adding that the gunman was believed to be working alone.
Following the shooting, the gunman, who was armed with an automatic weapon and pistol, was shot and killed in a police chase, the source said.
Investigators are currently working at the scene.
