MOSCOW, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - The upper house of the Russian parliament has agreed to the use of Russian peacekeepers in Chad, a deputy foreign minister said on Monday.

Rebels and government forces are currently engaged in armed clashes in the landlocked central African state.

Vladimir Titov said consent has been reached for the deployment of 200 peacekeepers, but added that "however, the actual number will be fewer," as the figure took into account reserves.

Rebels from the National Alliance group made another attempt to break through to N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, in early June. The rebels were repelled by government forces. In February, an alliance of rebel groups reached the capital and attacked the palace of President Idriss Deby before being expelled from the city.
