GROZNY, August 29 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian Interior Ministry officer was killed in Chechnya's capital when an unknown gunman shot him in the back, a police source in the North Caucasus republic said Friday.

The attack occurred Thursday evening at a gasoline station in Grozny, when the officer was getting into his car. He "sustained a gunshot wound into his back and died in hospital," a police source said.

He said an investigation had been started.

Attacks on police, troops and officials, and clashes with militants have remained frequent in Chechnya although major fighting with separatists officially ended in 2001, and substantial efforts have been made to revive the troubled republic.
