YAKUTSK, September 12 (RIA Novosti) - The Supreme Court of the northeastern Russian republic of Yakutia has convicted two 18-year-old women of attempted murder, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office said on Friday.

The two former students of Baikal State University were given 10-and 8-year prison sentences for assaulting and causing grievous bodily harm to a car driver.

The judge ruled that the women had hitched a ride on February 1 from a Toyota Vista driver with the intention of killing him and taking possession of his car.

As they approached their destination, one of the women took out a knife and stabbed the man in the head, neck, chest and arms, inflicting a total of 25 wounds, also hitting him on the head three times with a heavy blunt object.

The other woman restrained the driver as he tried to unfasten his seat belt.

Miraculously, the driver eventually managed to escape. The women did not give chase and went on a joyride in his car.

Shortly before the attack the women had been expelled from university for persistent bad grades.
