MAKHACHKALA, October 12 (RIA Novosti) - A penal system officer was shot dead in the capital of the Russian North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan, the republic's interior ministry said on Sunday.
Major Elmaddin Dibrayev was shot point-blank from a pistol in the center of Makhachkala on Saturday night, the ministry said.
An investigation has been launched and efforts are under way to find the attacker, the ministry said.
Daghestan and Ingushetia, which both border Chechnya, have seen a sharp increase in attacks on law enforcement and military personnel of late.
