SOCHI, October 15 (RIA Novosti) - Eight special police officers convicted of attacking a group of teenagers in a cafe in Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi were sentenced on Wednesday to between two and five years in prison.

The incident occurred in July 2006 at the Druzhba children's health resort, when a group of young people refused to show their documents to the police officers. The officers then attacked 29 people, of whom five were under 18.

The mother of one of the children told reporters after the court session: "This was the right verdict. Everything has been done in line with the law. I think that now law enforcers will think 10 times before committing such crimes."

Since the trial began in mid-October 2007, 120 witnesses have been questioned.

Of the eight officers, Maxim Ozhgikhin received the harshest sentence of five years, after being found guilty on four separate charges. All the officers have been barred from service for three years. Three other officers were released from the court, but are under a travel ban.

The defense has 10 days to appeal the sentences.
