Russian energy giant Gazprom will meet all its contractual obligations to supply Europe with gas despite difficulties caused by the global crisis, the Russian foreign minister said Thursday.
THE HAGUE, October 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russian energy giant Gazprom will meet all its contractual obligations to supply Europe with gas despite difficulties caused by the global crisis, the Russian foreign minister said Thursday.

Sergei Lavrov was responding to journalists' questions regarding reports that Russia could partly cut or fail to fulfill its commitments on energy deliveries to the European Union.

"I have not heard such reports," Lavrov said at a news conference after talks with his Dutch counterpart. "All the contractual obligations Gazprom has will be strictly fulfilled both for Europe and other partners."

Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen said the global crisis would not affect the construction of the Nord Stream gas pipeline from Russia to Western Europe.

"There are no grounds to suppose the credit crisis will introduce any changes into energy cooperation with Russia," he said.

The Nord Stream pipeline, which will pump gas from Siberia to Europe under the Baltic Sea, bypassing East European transit countries, is being built jointly by Gazprom, Germany's E.ON and BASF, and Dutch gas transportation firm Gasunie at an estimated cost of $12 billion.

Russia has been hard-hit by the global credit crisis, which has toppled Western banks and pushed developed economies toward recession. The country's stock markets have lost around two-thirds of their value since their May highpoints, amid declining oil prices and other investor concerns.
