MOSCOW, November 11 (RIA Novosti) - The Cuban foreign minister met with Russia's president in Moscow on Tuesday, and said the countries must seek to build stronger economic ties.

"Political relations are at an excellent level, and coordination between our Foreign Ministries is functioning well. New opportunities are now appearing to develop economic relations," Felipe Perez Roque told Dmitry Medvedev in the Kremlin.

He conveyed "warm greetings" from Fidel and Raul Castro, and handed Medvedev an invitation from President Raul Castro to visit Cuba.

Medvedev also stressed the importance of economic ties between the countries, saying: "this element of our relations is not as developed as we would like it to be."

However, he said Russia and Cuba "have overcome the pause that arose in our relations during the last decade, and now our contacts are wide-reaching and friendly."

He called Cuba "one of our key partners in Latin America."

Roque also met with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, who described Russia's defense cooperation with Cuba as "an important component of our close partnership."
