"We have filed a cassation appeal with the Supreme Court seeking to repeal the guilty verdict by the Moscow City Court and send the case for a re-examination," Ruslan Koblev said.
On November 13, after a jury had found him guilty, the Moscow City Court sentenced Frenkel to 19 years in prison for organizing the murder of Andrei Kozlov, a deputy Central Bank chairman.
Kozlov, who oversaw bank licensing and led a campaign against corruption and money laundering, was shot dead along with his driver in September 2006. Kozlov had earlier revoked the licenses of banks run by Frenkel.
The court sentenced the assassin, Alexei Polovinkin, to life in prison, and gave the other five defendants prison terms ranging from six to 24 years.
Frenkel has been in custody since January 2007. Investigators earlier said he paid $300,000 for the murder, and that the perpetrators received between $3,000 and $8,500 with the intermediaries receiving over $80,000 each.
