Alexander Litvinenko died in the U.K. of radioactive poisoning on November 23, 2006, three weeks after suddenly falling ill. British investigators accused Russian agent-turned-businessman Lugovoi of the murder, and demanded his extradition, sparking a major diplomatic row with Moscow.
"I have been placed in charge of the Primorye Territory, the Kamchatka Territory and the Irkutsk Region," Lugovoi said, describing the "lucrative" Far Eastern regions as "a stronghold of Russia's eastern borders."
The politician pledged to strengthen the party's position in Vladivostok, which will host a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2012.
"We will take part in all elections in the Far East, participating most actively and take up the opposition slot, including in relation to the ruling party, United Russia," the LDPR member said.
He also promised that his party would work together effectively with the local authorities.
"Although we are an opposition party, we are in favor of regional development, and reaching a compromise with those in power," Lugovoi said.
