The victim, a student at a Moscow medical institution, was attacked on Thursday evening.
Police said the Bangladeshi student was hit over the head with a heavy instrument during the attack but managed to make his way to a police station a few hours later to report the crime.
The source could not say whether the attack was racially motivated.
Last week a Cameroon national died following an attack in the Russian capital by a group of unidentified assailants.
Last month Russia's Interior Ministry warned that Russia could see a rise in crimes against foreigners and migrant workers amid the worsening economic situation in the country.
The ministry has set up a special group to investigate racially-motivated crimes.
