KRASNODAR, January 25 (RIA Novosti) - Two girls aged 8-10 drowned after they went under ice in a pond in south Russia, the regional investigators' committee said on Sunday.

The girls drowned on Saturday evening in the town of Kropotkin in the east of the Krasnodar Territory and their bodies were discovered by police on Sunday morning, the committee said.

"The disappearance of the girls was reported by their parents who turned to police. At first, they tried to find the girls on their own but their efforts failed to crown with success. On Sunday morning, the bodies were found by police. After that, rescuers from the emergencies ministry who had arrived at the scene recovered the bodies from water," the committee said.

The pond is located within the town's bounds in an industrial area, the committee said.

According to preliminary information, an accident is the likely cause for the drowning of the girls.
