Ex-Yukos lawyer freed from jail

MOSCOW, April 27 (RIA Novosti) -- Svetlana Bakhmina, a former Yukos lawyer and mother of three, was released from prison on Monday, a week after a Moscow court granted her parole, a friend of the family told RIA Novosti.

"A few hours ago, her husband took her home, and she is already with her family," Denis Silyutin said.

He added that any statement she might make would only be forthcoming in the next few days.

Bakhmina, 39, served four years of a 6-1/2-year prison term for embezzlement and tax evasion. She gave birth to a daughter last November.

Her case has attracted much attention, with Kremlin critics saying she was a victim of a politically motivated crackdown on the now defunct Yukos oil giant and its jailed founder Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

Her appeals for parole had been turned down several times by a court in the Volga republic of Mordovia, where she served the sentence, but the latest request was heard by a Moscow court.

Khodorkovsky is currently on trial on new embezzlement and money laundering charges that could add 21 years to the eight-year jail term he is already serving.
