MOSCOW, June 22 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov to step up anti-terrorism security in the region following an assassination attempt on the president of neighboring Ingushetia.
President Yunus-bek Yevkurov, 45, was injured on Monday morning when his car was targeted by a suicide car bomber as his motorcade drove near the city of Nazran.
"A crime was committed today, which was an attempted act on the Ingush president's life. This is a result of the work that the president of the neighboring republic has been and is still doing... to establish order and eradicate militants," Medvedev said.
He added that he hoped "this work would continue, even in a strengthened regime."
Kadyrov agreed with the Russian president saying that current anti-terrorism methods were yielding positive results.
"Today's bloody terrorist attack proved once again that we are on the right track and that we will certainly complete all the measures started against terrorists and extremists," he said.
Ramzan's father Akhmad Kadyrov, who was the first president of Chechnya, was killed in a terrorist attack. He died in an explosion on May 9, 2004, in a stadium during a WWII victory parade. Fifteen other people died in the attack
Russia's North Caucasus republics have been swept by a wave of violence recently two months after the government formally ended its decade-long counterterrorism operation in Chechnya, which witnessed two brutal separatist wars in the 1990s and early 2000s.
