L'AQUILA, July 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev gave his conditional backing on Friday to a proposal to hold a second G8 summit later this year in Italy's L'Aquila.

L'Aquila, hit by a devastating earthquake in April, hosted a three-day G8 summit that closed earlier on Friday. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi earlier invited the leaders of the G8 to hold another summit in the town before the end of the year.

"If the need arises to meet, we will do so anywhere," Medvedev told reporters after the summit.

He also described the town as "a beautiful venue" and said a second summit would be "a contribution to the restoration of L'Aquila,"

However, he stressed that there would have to be enough topics for discussion to justify another summit, pointing out that a G20 summit was due to be held in September.

The G20 will gather for a summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 24-25.

On Wednesday, Kremlin aide Sergei Prikhodko dismissed fears raised by a number of analysts that the G8 summit would be overshadowed by the Pittsburgh forum and described the discussions in L'Aquila as "serious and productive."

Meanwhile, no incidents were reported during a protest march staged by anti-globalists in L'Aquila. The demonstration also saw protests against the slow course of restoration work in the town.

The venue for the summit was moved from Sardinia's La Maddalena to L'Aquila in an effort by Italian authorities to draw attention to the problems of the devastated region.
