MOSCOW, July 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russia’s Kruzenshtern sailing ship has left the U.S. port of Boston and headed for Canada’s Halifax, taking part in the final stage of an international tall ships regatta.

Kruzenshtern, one of the world’s largest sailing ships, left her home port of Kaliningrad on April 19 for the third journey to circumnavigate the globe. As part of the voyage, Kruzenshtern is taking part in the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge 2009, a journey of some 7,000 nautical miles along traditional commercial routes in the North Atlantic.

On July 8 the vessel arrived in Boston Harbor to participate in the opening ceremony of the Sail Boston 2009 festival.

While in Boston, the Russian vessel was visited by several high-ranking visitors, including Bert Rogers, executive director of the American Sail Training Association, which organizes the Boston regatta.

The consuls general of Chile and Argentina, which will receive Kruzenshtern during the second stage of her circumnavigation, were also among the guests.

The four-mastered barque was built in 1926 in Germany’s Bremerhaven-Wesermunde under the name Padua. She is easy to recognize due to the distinctive black-and-white design of her sides, which imitates gunports. The style was often used to scare away pirates on ships that traded with the East.

She was given to the Soviet Union in 1946 as World War II reparations and was renamed after a Russian admiral of German descent, Johann Krusenstern (1770-1846), who performed Russia’s first circumnavigation. Since 1970s the ship has been used as a training vessel for naval cadets.
