Rescuers find one more body at accident-hit Siberian hydropower plant

KHAKASIA, August 30 (RIA Novosti) - Rescuers recovered on Sunday another body at Russia's largest hydropower plant, hit by a disaster earlier this month, bringing the death toll to 72, a source in the rescue team said.

"This morning we discovered one more body. We found this man's body under the ninth hydroelectric unit," the source told RIA Novosti.

The body has not yet been officially identified.

Three people are still missing following the August 17 accident at the Sayano-Shushenskaya station in Siberia's Khakasia Republic, which occurred during repair work. A surge of water burst into the turbine hall, completely destroying three turbines and flooding several lower stories of the plant.

The Russian government has pledged compensation of 1 million rubles ($31,500) to the victims' family, and 100,000 rubles to each survivor. The dam owner RusHydro is also due to pay a further 1 million rubles in compensation, although relatives are demanding 5 million rubles in damages.

Work started last Monday to repair the power plant, now that almost all the water has been pumped out of the facilities.
