ST. PETERSBURG, September 21 (RIA Novosti) - Russian border guards detained four Afghans, who were attempting to cross into Finland through an underground tunnel, a Federal Security Service (FSB) report released on Monday said.
The four men, two of whom had no documentation, were reported to have recently lost their jobs at a Moscow market and had decided "to try their luck" in Finland.
"Border officials for two hours were tailing four Afghan nationals who were crossing the border zone through an underground tunnel," the report read.
In a separate incident over the weekend, a Moldovan man attempted to cross the border from Russia into Finland to try and find work in Norway. The man had been working in Moscow as a construction worker, but because of the financial crisis had lost his job.
Border guards detained the man, who was carrying a compass, a map of the local area and a small supply of food.
