Russian MP removed from Estonian travel "blacklist"

15:14 23/09/2009

TALLIN, September 23 (RIA Novosti) - Estonia has removed a Russian MP from a "blacklist" of officials, who are prohibited from entering the Baltic States and other Schengen countries, a national newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Sergei Makarov was included on the travel entry list in 2007, when the foreign ministry accused him of involvement in hacker attacks on government websites after Estonia dismantled a Soviet war memorial in the capital in May of the same year.

The removal of the Bronze Soldier led to street protests in the capital with around 1,000 demonstrators arrested during the ensuing clashes with police.

The Postimees said that the decision was made by the country's Justice Minister Rein Lang following a request from the foreign ministry to remove Makarov and the head of the Nashi youth group Vasily Yakemenko from the list. However Lang rejected the request for Yakemenko

Earlier Ukrainian authorities also denied Sergei Markov entry into the country.

Ukrainian entry blacklists also include deputy Russian lower house speaker Alexander Babakov, deputy chairman of the CIS affairs committee Konstantin Zatulin and MP Viktor Vodolatsky.
