MOSCOW, September 23 (RIA Novosti) - The Moscow city legislature has appointed the Russian capital's first human rights ombudsman.
Alexander Muzykantsky, former head of Moscow's central administrative district and onetime information minister with the Moscow city government, was appointed to the independent position in a majority vote on Wednesday.
He was proposed for the post by Mayor Yury Luzhkov. Another contender for the post, a member of the liberal Yabloko party, withdrew his candidature earlier.
The 68-year-old has already been sworn in, and will also take on responsibility for children's rights in the capital after the Moscow authorities scrapped the ombudsman post.
