Two Russian warships grouped on Tuesday in the Indian Ocean for joint maneuvers, the Black Sea Fleet press service reported.

"Today, the Pyotr Veliky heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser of the Northern Fleet and the Moskva missile cruiser of the Black Sea Fleet have met up in the Indian Ocean near the Arabian Peninsula," the press service said.

The warships will conduct a series of exercises in the Indian Ocean.

They are due to arrive in Russia's Far Eastern port of Vladivostok in June-July to take part in the Vostok-2010 exercise. The exact date of the drills is yet to be announced.

The Moskva, the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, which left the Ukrainian port of Sevastopol on April 9, crossed the Suez Canal on April 19.

The Pyotr Veliky recently arrived in Syria's Mediterranean port of Tartus ahead of the drills.

Russia announced in 2007 that it was building up its naval presence throughout the world.

A Russian Pacific Fleet task force, comprised of the Marshal Shaposhnikov, an Udaloy class missile destroyer, a salvage tug and a tanker, is currently on an anti-piracy mission off the Somali coast.
