Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday measures should be taken to compel companies and enterprises to buy electricity from renewable sources.
"I am directing the government to consider the possibility of purchasing electricity generated from renewable energy sources at free market prices," he told the Cabinet.
He did not say whether the measures should also apply to households and individuals, but stressed they must be in compliance with the law.
"If this is done on a legal basis and in a favorable way, there will be an obligation to purchase renewable energy," Medvedev said.
Renewable energy is undeveloped in Russia although the size of the country and number of natural resources present considerable scope for it.
