Violence spikes in North Caucasus

One police officer was killed and another injured in an attack in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan on Friday, a police spokesman said.

The officer died when a police car was blown up near the village of Chontaul around 18:30 Moscow time [14:30 GMT], the spokesman said.

Russia's North Caucasus, which includes the volatile republics of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, sees frequent attacks by militants on police, federal troops and officials.
