Nearly 240,000 people are fighting wildfires and peat bog fires in Russia's regions, a spokeswoman for the Emergencies Ministry's information service said on Saturday.
Over the last 24 hours, over 1,000 homes have been destroyed and entire villages burned to the ground in the largest wildfire ever to hit the European part of Russia.
"Work is being done to protect residential areas, as well as extinguishing hotspots," the spokeswoman said, adding "238,000 were involved" in the fight against the wildfires.
According to the Emergencies Ministry's figures on Saturday morning, some 121,500 hectares of forest are burning. There are also 18 peat bog fires, 9 of which are in the Central Federal District.
An emergency situation has been announced in 14 regions in Russia. Thousands of people have been left homeless.
Temperatures across much of western and central Russia have topped 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) during the past five weeks, causing peat bog and forest fires and creating what is thought to be the worst drought since 1972.

- arnoldvinette@yahoo.comRussian Government very proactive to help fire victims15:51, 31/07/2010Saturday July 31, 2010
I have been captivated by the dramatic news of the wild fires now sweeping through central and southern Russia coined European Russia.
What has really caught my attention though is the proactive nature of the Russian government to assist the fire victims with new homes and jobs. This helps any fire victim(s) immediately with having to deal with the stress of an unprecedented crisis.
I am from California and wild fires are quite common. At times hundreds of homes can burn to the ground and such is the case right now in southern California.
However never in my life have I ever heard either the Federal or State government offer to help people rebuild their homes or provide jobs if theirs has been lost.
Seeing the reaction of the Russian Federal Governement to assist its population in times of crisis like this makes a very good impression to those of us reading about it around the world.
Go Russia! May cooler weather and rain arrive soon to assist with your fire fighting efforts.
