A policeman in Russia's Far East unexpectedly took on the role of a doctor in helping a woman give birth at a police checkpoint, a police spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

A pregnant woman expecting her third child from the village of Kornilovka was on her way to the hospital after labor pains began prematurely, however was not able to reach her destination on time. Her friend, who was driving the car, stopped at a police checkpoint where the policeman, himself a father of two, immediately began helping the pregnant woman.

"When the girl was born, she wasn't breathing. At that the same time other inspectors had stopped another vehicle because the driver wasn't wearing a seatbelt. As it turned out the violator was a doctor," the spokeswoman said.

The doctor rendered first aid to the newborn child and she began breathing. An ambulance soon arrived and took the mother and child to the hospital. Both are in satisfactory condition.

"When [the woman's] labor started, no one panicked; they all worked automatically after they understood the woman needed help. Panic began after everything ended," the spokeswoman said.
