Russian police investigating Tuesday's blast in the southern Russian city of Pyatigorsk have obtained vital information that could help them get to the bottom of the case, the Russian interior minister said on Thursday.

Russian police investigating Tuesday's blast in the southern Russian city of Pyatigorsk have obtained vital information that could help them get to the bottom of the case, the Russian interior minister said on Thursday.

On Thursday Rashid Nurgaliyev held two meetings on the investigations into the Pyatigorsk blast and another terrorist attack that took place in the southern Russian region of North Ossetia on the same day.

"This...shows there is a real investigative base on the Pyatigorsk case...the information is being verified," Nurgaliyev said.

On Tuesday a suicide bomber killed a policeman and injured three others in an attack targeting a police checkpoint in North Ossetia.

Later at least 30 people were injured when a Lada car exploded near a cafe in the centre of the southern Russian city of Pyatigorsk.

President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the head of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) to do everything possible to get to the bottom of the incidents.

Pyatigorsk is the capital of Russia's North Caucasus Federal District, which includes North Ossetia as well as the volatile republics of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, where terrorist attacks and militant clashes are common.
