The two car bombs defused in the south Russian city of Stavropol had the combined strength of 60 kg of TNT, a security source told RIA Novosti on Friday.

Two residential tower blocks and a school in the south-west of the city were evacuated on Thursday afternoon after the discovery of the first car - which contained a corpse covered in explosive devices. The second vehicle was discovered a short time later.

“The bombs consisted of 30 kg of TNT equivalent each and comprised of aluminum powder and nitrate fertilizer,” the source said.

A bomb in the North Caucasus city killed eight people on May 26 and injured over 30.

The Stavropol Territory is the largest region in the North Caucasus Federal District, but has remained largely free of the violence that plagues nearby republics, including Ingushetia and Dagestan.
