A Russian space freighter docked with the International Space Station (ISS) on Saturday.

Progress M-08M failed to dock automatically with the Pirs docking module on the ISS and flight engineer Alexander Kaleri took manual control of the docking.

"This decision was made for technical reasons when the spacecraft was 10 meters away from the ISS," a Mission Control spokesman said.

Russia launched a Soyuz carrier rocket with the Progress M-08M cargo spacecraft on October 27 from the Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan.

The freighter has delivered more than 2,500 metric tons of scientific equipment, fuel, food, water and parcels from relatives to the ISS crew.

Progress-family freighters have been the backbone of the Russian space cargo fleet for decades. In addition to their main mission as cargo spacecraft, they are also used to adjust the ISS's orbit and conduct scientific experiments.
