Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called on Wednesday for the establishment of a fully-fledged nanotechnology branch in Russia.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called on Wednesday for the establishment of a fully-fledged nanotechnology branch in Russia.

"All types of businesses should be represented - both private and state, up to transnational corporations," Medvedev told a nanotechnology forum in Moscow.

He pledged that Russian leadership would do its best to tackle the bureaucratic obstacles in the way of the ambitious plan.

If the plans are implemented by 2015, Russia's share of the world nanotechnology market could rise to 3 percent, the president said.

Medvedev, who portrays himself as a young and technologically savvy leader, is seeking to improve the economic environment in the country and create incentives for domestic businesses to switch to a knowledge-based and innovative economy.

The Russian president has made developing the high-tech sector and encouraging innovative research the focal point of his economic agenda.
