The Russian and South Korean presidents on Wednesday called for the resumption of six-party talks on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The Russian and South Korean presidents on Wednesday called for the resumption of six-party talks on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

"We reiterated our commitment to the six-party negotiating process and called for the early resumption of negotiations on certain conditions," Dmitry Medvedev said after talks with his South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-bak in Seoul.

Medvedev did not specify what the "conditions" were.

North Korea pulled out of talks with Russia, Japan, China, the United States and South Korea over its nuclear program last April after the United Nations condemned the communist state's missile tests.

Medvedev said negotiation and the strengthening of ties were the only realistic ways to resolve the dispute.

"The modern security architecture in the region should be built according to international law on the basis of agreements between all partners, taking into account the interests of all states in the region," he said.
