The Moscow city government published the monthly salaries of thousands of foreign workers on its website on Wednesday.

The Moscow city government published the monthly salaries of thousands of foreign workers on its website on Wednesday.

As well as income, the list details the company name and address, and job description of every work-permit holder in Moscow. It does not disclose any names.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin asked the labor department on Friday to publish its data on foreigners working in Moscow in a bid to increase transparency in the capital's labor market, which harbors thousands of illegal workers.

The request came after Sobyanin took issue with the labor and employment department for submitting a request to invite more than a thousand Chinese nationals to work in the Russian capital.

The department asked the federal authorities to allow the employment of 1,146 Chinese nationals in the city.

Department chief Neterebsky said Chinese nationals are allowed to come to Russia to work in Oriental medical centers and Chinese restaurants, but Sobyanin said that too many were illegally taking positions in the accountancy and engineering sectors that could and should be filled by Russians.
