One Russian national died when a Russian-made Il-76 cargo plane crashed early on Sunday in Karachi in Pakistan while the other seven crewmembers killed in the incident are presumably Ukrainians, a spokesman for the Russian consulate in Karachi said.

"According to the consulate general's information, there was a Russian national aboard the crashed plane. The other crewmembers are presumably Ukrainians, according to preliminary information that is being checked," Alexei Zenkov said.

The plane burst in flames shortly after a takeoff from the Karachi International Airport heading for Khartoum, Sudan, and went down in an upscale housing complex for naval officers, injuring several persons on the ground, local officials said.

Zenkov said the plane belonged to the airline Sunway.

"According to our data, this is not a Russian air company. We are now verifying information on this company," he said.
