The Russian embassy in Belarus requested local authorities on Friday to arrange a meeting between Russian diplomats and two Russian citizens who were arrested during the recent protest rallies in Minsk.

Eleven Russians were detained following the December 19 presidential polls, which saw President Alexander Lukashenko win a landslide to secure a fourth term in office. All of them were released on Wednesday, but two were arrested again on Thursday.

"The embassy has sent an official request to Belarusian authorities to arrange a meeting in the first half of December 31 with two Russian citizens detained for taking part in mass riots," embassy spokesman Vadim Gusev said.

More than 600 protesters were arrested in Minsk after police dispersed the crowd which tried to storm parliament following the announcement of election results.

They could face prison sentences of up to 15 years.
