Moscow's airports, where thousands of stranded passengers spent several agonizing days, have returned to normal operation, a source in the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) said on Friday.

Last weekend, the Moscow Region was coated by freezing rain which hampered the operation of the city's major airports, Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo, where hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed.

Some 20,000 passengers were affected by the flight chaos, according to the Russian Tourism Association, while airport authorities put the number at 10,000.

"The operation of Moscow airports has stabilized, they resumed scheduled flights and are currently operating normally," the source said.

As of December 30, the capital's airports served 99,000 passengers, including 42,600 in Domodedovo, 36,700 in Sheremetyevo and about 19,700 in Moscow's third airport, Vnukovo, Rosaviatsia's source said, adding the air strip is being cleaned and the jets are being treated with de-icing fluid.
